Katashi Lake, located near Kobrin, is often chosen by residents of the Brest region for outdoor recreation, camping, and picnics. The high pine forest and clean sandy beaches make this body of water attractive to different categories of vacationers. Lake Katashi is man-made, it arose on the site of a former sand quarry. Previously, there were several unrelated springs located here. But before the 1980 Moscow Olympics, active road construction began, including the Brest-Moscow highway. And the sand for the construction of the highway section was mined in this particular quarry. Later, the management of the Zarya collective farm, which took over the quarry, decided to continue the development. After the work was completed, the quarry gradually filled with water, and a lake appeared. This explains the correct shape of the reservoir, the flat bottom and gentle sandy shores. According to historical sources, Verkhovskaya Mountain was previously located on the site of the lake, next to it was the village of Verkhi. Later, the village was gradually absorbed by the larger settlement of Katashi, which gave the lake its name. Local residents appealed to the leadership of the region with proposals to return the area, including the lake, to the historical name - Verkhovskoye. But this project is not being considered yet. There are fish in the lake: carp, burbot, carp, bream. The forest along the banks is mostly coniferous, interspersed with low shrubs. Wild raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and blueberries grow along the shores, and locals often go here to pick berries. On the shores of Lake Katashi, it is only possible to relax as a savage in their own tents. The local collective farm, which owns the territory, monitors cleanliness, timely thinns the forest and cleans the shores of the lake, but there is not enough funding for camping.

Wonderful beach. The locals call it the Belarusian Maldives. We were in the afternoon in the middle of the week, there weren't many people. White, clean sand, without debris and cigarette butts. The water is clear, but grass grows from the middle of the lake, and it's not very pleasant to swim over it. It's deep right by the shore, you don't have to go far. There are gazebos for free. You can rent a sap (inflatable board with paddle) for the price of 25 rubles. There's a bathroom, but I'd rather not go there. 😅
