Vianden Castle is one of Luxembourg's main gems and the largest fortified residence west of the Rhine. It stands majestically above the town of the same name in the picturesque Ardennes Mountains by the Ur River. The fate of the castle was not easy and full of ups and downs: · Ancient roots: The first fortifications on this site appeared in late antiquity, around 275 AD, as a Roman fort. · Medieval grandeur: The main construction was carried out from the XI to the XIV century. At that time, the castle became the residence of the powerful Counts of Vianden, who competed with the House of Luxembourg itself. · Decay and destruction: In 1820, King William I auctioned the castle. The new owner began to take it apart, selling tiles, beams and even doors, turning the residence into ruins. · Renaissance: It was not until 1977 that Grand Duke Jean handed over the ruins to the state, after which a large-scale restoration began, which was fully completed by 1990. The castle is unique in that it organically combines various architectural eras.: · It is one of the most luxurious Romanesque and Gothic style feudal residences in Europe. · Key elements: Romanesque palace (Palas) with a large knight's hall, a decagonal chapel (a rare architectural form) and a later Renaissance mansion of Nassau of the 17th century. The castle has now been completely restored and is open to the public.: · Knight's Hall and Weapons Hall: Restored crossbows, muskets and armor are displayed here. · Banquet hall: There is a fireplace from 1450 with coats of arms of noble families. · Atmosphere: In some rooms, historical settings have been recreated using wax figures to immerse visitors in the Medieval era. Interesting facts · Literary connection: In 1871, the famous writer Victor Hugo lived in Vianden. He spent several months in the town, and his name is still revered here. · Military valor: During the Second World War in November 1944, the castle became the site of a fierce battle in which the Luxembourg Resistance held back the onslaught of the SS troops.
