I visited the monastery in the early tenth. In the Svyatogorsk hierarchy of monasteries, Hilandar occupies the fourth position out of twenty (St. Panteleimon Monastery occupies the nineteenth). The peculiar beauty of the walls, towers, and buildings of this cradle of Serbian spirituality are easily recognizable. The monastery has been subjected to devastating fires more than once, the last one happened in 2004. During the days of my visit, restoration work was still underway. We were received as a dear guest. I had a warm conversation with the abbot. They conducted him through the monastery halls, including the Cathedral Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (built in the 14th century). They showed the shrines of Stavropol, the icon of the Mother of God "Troeruchitsa". They gave me a copy of it. They led him to the vine growing from the tomb of St. Simeon, which cures infertility. Seeds are given to those in need and prayers are offered for them. He visited the library of the monastic retreat (more than 800 Slavic manuscripts are kept). I held in my hands documents from the correspondence of the time of Ivan the Terrible. They were invited to a fraternal meal, during which the Holy Scriptures were read. In the evening, my guide (with a long beard like an Old Believer) led me to a secluded basement, where they talked for a long time about the blessings and sorrows of life. He told me how he came to the monastery. He was a military man, participated in the battles in Yugoslavia in the 90s. A grenade landed nearby, but did not explode. A few days later, another one crashed in another battle. It didn't explode. It's a signal. He did not tempt fate, went to a monastery. The next day, the monastery vineyards and winery were shown. We were escorted to the border of the Holy Mountain.
