A brief history · Built in the 12th century (first mentioned in 1194) by the Maretsch family, wealthy merchants and judges. Unlike defensive fortresses, it was originally conceived as a representative residence to showcase wealth and status. · Throughout its history, the castle has repeatedly changed owners, was rebuilt and gradually fell into disrepair. In the 19th century, it was partially reconstructed in the Neo-Gothic style, which added to its fabulous appearance. · In the 1980s, the castle was bought and completely restored by the autonomous province of Bolzano. Since 1994, it has been operating as a prestigious cultural and congress center. Architecture and features · Location: Located just a 10-minute walk from the central Piazza of Bolzano (Piazza Walther), on the banks of the river Talvera. · Exterior: Rectangular shape, four massive corner towers with battlements, surrounded by a moat (now dry). It looks very picturesque and "toylike". · Frescoes: The main treasure of the castle is a series of secular frescoes from the 16th century in one of the towers. They depict scenes from the life of the medieval nobility: tournaments, hunts, holidays, as well as portraits of the owners of the castle. This is a rare example of non-religious painting of that time in the region.
